There’s no scientific rule that says you must avoid certain colors after 50. Skin tone, undertone, hair color, contrast, and personal style matter much more than age.
If you’re using this as a style topic, five shades that can sometimes make a complexion look washed out are:
- Beige too close to your skin tone — can reduce contrast and make the face appear less defined.
- Cool, pale gray — may look flat against some warm complexions.
- Muddy olive or khaki — can emphasize sallowness in certain skin tones.
- Very pale yellow — can wash out some complexions, particularly when it closely matches the skin’s undertone.
- Neon shades — their intensity can overpower the face rather than complement it.
But you don’t need to ban any of them. Try wearing a challenging color away from your face, or pair it with a shade that gives you better contrast.
A much better rule than “avoid these colors after 50” is: wear the colors that make your complexion look clear, lively, and even—at any age.
