Clear Your Throat and Lungs of Mucus With This 2-Ingredient Recipe
The claim that a two-ingredient recipe can “clean your lungs” is exaggerated. Your lungs have their own mucus-clearing mechanisms, and treatment depends on what’s causing the phlegm—such as a cold, allergies, asthma, reflux, or a respiratory infection.
A gentle 2-ingredient drink
Honey + warm water
- 1 cup (240 mL) warm water
- 1–2 teaspoons honey
Stir and sip slowly. Honey can soothe an irritated throat and reduce coughing, which may make mucus easier to tolerate. It doesn’t literally dissolve mucus deep inside the lungs.
Never give honey to a child under 1 year old.
Other ways to loosen mucus
- Drink adequate fluids unless you’ve been advised to restrict them.
- Use a humidifier if indoor air is dry.
- A warm shower may temporarily help loosen secretions.
- Saline nasal spray can help when mucus is coming from post-nasal drainage.
- Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
Don’t inhale or drink potentially harmful mixtures such as bleach, concentrated essential oils, or cleaning products.
🚨 When to seek medical care
Get urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue/gray lips, confusion, or coughing up significant amounts of blood.
If phlegm or coughing persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by fever, wheezing, weight loss, or worsening breathlessness, get evaluated rather than relying on a home remedy.
Bottom line: Warm water with honey may soothe your throat, but there is no proven two-ingredient recipe that cleans mucus out of the lungs. The underlying cause matters most.
