If You Have Lines on Your Nails, It Could Mean Several Things
Lines on your fingernails are common and are often harmless. However, their appearance, direction, color, and changes over time can sometimes provide clues about your health.
4 Types of Nail Lines You Should Know About
1. Vertical lines
These run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. They are often a normal part of aging, although brittle nails or other symptoms may warrant further evaluation.
2. Horizontal lines
Deep grooves across the nail, called Beau’s lines, can develop when nail growth temporarily slows because of illness, injury, or other physical stress.
3. Dark or black lines
These may result from pigmentation or injury. However, a new or changing dark stripe, especially on one nail, should be examined by a healthcare professional to rule out serious causes.
4. Ridges with brittle nails
Dryness, repeated exposure to water or chemicals, and sometimes nutritional or medical conditions may contribute.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Consult a healthcare professional if nail changes appear suddenly, become progressively worse, or occur with pain, swelling, or unusual discoloration. Do not assume that nail lines automatically mean you have a vitamin deficiency or another disease.
