9 Signs of Diabetes That Appear at Night

🌙 9 Signs of Diabetes You May Notice at Night

Diabetes doesn’t have a special set of symptoms that occur only at night. However, high or low blood glucose can become more noticeable during nighttime, and some symptoms may repeatedly disturb sleep.

9 signs worth paying attention to

  1. Frequent nighttime urination — High blood glucose can cause the kidneys to excrete extra glucose and water.
  2. Excessive thirst at night — Fluid loss from frequent urination can leave you unusually thirsty.
  3. Dry mouth — Dehydration associated with elevated glucose can contribute.
  4. Night sweats or shaking — These can occur with low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), particularly in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medications.
  5. Restless or disrupted sleep — Glucose fluctuations, thirst, or repeated urination can interfere with sleep.
  6. Morning headaches — These have many possible causes but can occur with overnight glucose fluctuations or poor sleep.
  7. Tingling, burning, or pain in the feet — Diabetic nerve damage can cause symptoms that are particularly noticeable when you’re resting at night.
  8. Itching or recurrent genital/skin infections — Persistently elevated glucose can increase susceptibility to certain infections.
  9. Unusual nighttime hunger — Repeated hunger can occur with glucose fluctuations, although it isn’t specific to diabetes.

🩸 Don’t diagnose diabetes from nighttime symptoms

Many of these symptoms have causes unrelated to diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can also develop with few or no symptoms, so blood testing is much more reliable than looking for a particular symptom pattern.

If you’re repeatedly experiencing thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or recurrent infections, consider asking a healthcare professional about fasting blood glucose and/or an HbA1c test.

If you have diabetes and develop confusion, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or very high or very low blood glucose, seek urgent medical assistance.
