10 Early Signs of Dementia to Take Seriously
Dementia isn’t a normal or inevitable part of aging. Early symptoms can be subtle, and one occasional lapse in memory doesn’t mean someone has dementia. What matters is a persistent change that interferes with everyday life.
- Memory loss that disrupts daily activities — repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or information.
- Difficulty planning or solving problems — struggling with familiar tasks such as managing bills or following a usual recipe.
- Trouble completing familiar tasks — getting confused while doing activities that were previously routine.
- Confusion about time or place — frequently losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are.
- Difficulty with familiar visual or spatial tasks — problems judging distances, navigating familiar places, or recognizing objects.
- New problems with speaking or writing — struggling to find common words or follow conversations.
- Misplacing things in unusual ways — putting objects in inappropriate places and being unable to retrace steps.
- Poor judgment or unusual decision-making — such as suddenly making risky financial choices.
- Withdrawal from social activities or hobbies — losing interest because activities have become difficult or confusing.
- Noticeable changes in personality or mood — increased anxiety, irritability, apathy, suspicion, or confusion that is unusual for the person.
When to get help
If these changes are progressive or affecting independence, arrange a medical evaluation. Many conditions—including medication effects, depression, sleep problems, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, and hearing or vision problems—can cause cognitive symptoms and may be treatable.
Sudden confusion, speech difficulty, facial drooping, weakness, or vision changes is different: those can indicate a stroke and require emergency medical attention rather than waiting for a dementia evaluation.
