Signs of vitamin B12 deficiency are ignored

Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency That Can Be Overlooked

Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop gradually, and some symptoms may initially be mistaken for stress, aging, or simply being tired. Possible signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue or weakness
  • Pale skin
  • A sore, swollen, or unusually smooth tongue
  • Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” in the hands or feet
  • Balance or walking problems
  • Muscle weakness
  • Brain fog, poor concentration, or memory difficulties
  • Mood changes, including irritability or depression
  • Vision problems in more advanced cases
  • Heart palpitations or shortness of breath, particularly when anemia develops

Who is more likely to become deficient?

Risk is higher with vegan diets without B12 supplementation, certain gastrointestinal conditions or surgeries, and some medications, including metformin and acid-suppressing medicines.

The important point is that nerve damage from prolonged B12 deficiency can become permanent, so persistent neurological symptoms shouldn’t be ignored. A blood test can help determine whether B12 deficiency is present.

Don’t take very high-dose B12 simply because you have fatigue or tingling—those symptoms have many possible causes. A healthcare professional can determine whether testing or supplementation is appropriate.
