If you are noticing vertical lines (ridges) running from your cuticles to the tips of your nails after the age of 40, it is a very common sign of natural aging.
Often referred to by dermatologists as “nail wrinkles,” these lines are generally harmless. Just like skin and hair change over time, the rate of cell turnover and moisture retention in your nails decreases as you grow older, causing the surface to become less smooth.
However, depending on how the lines look, they can occasionally point to a few other underlying factors:
  • Dehydration & Dryness: Hands that are frequently washed or exposed to harsh elements lose their natural protective oils, making ridges more pronounced.
  • Nutrient Gaps: Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals—such as iron, zinc, or B-complex vitamins—can impact how smoothly your body produces keratin (the structural protein of the nail).
  • Horizontal vs. Vertical Lines (An Important Distinction): While vertical lines are typically a normal part of aging, horizontal grooves running across the nail (known as Beau’s lines) are different. Horizontal lines indicate that nail growth was temporarily interrupted by a significant physical stressor, severe illness, or nutritional shock.
If your vertical ridges are accompanied by splitting, severe brittleness, or unexpected changes in nail color, it’s worth mentioning to your doctor or a dermatologist to rule out any underlying deficiencies or health conditions.
