How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

Restoring the brilliant sparkle of your favorite jewelry doesn’t require harsh chemical dips or expensive ultrasonic cleaners. For most everyday pieces, you can easily remove dulling oils, lotions, and grime right at home using gentle, everyday ingredients.
Here is a safe, effective method to bring your jewelry back to life—along with important rules for what to avoid.

The Safe Warm-Soak Method (Best for Gold, Platinum, and Diamonds)

This simple technique works wonderfully for solid gold, platinum, and hard gemstones like diamonds, sapphires, and rubies.

What You Need:

  • A small bowl
  • Warm (not boiling) water
  • A few drops of mild dish soap (like Dawn)
  • A very soft-bristled toothbrush (such as a children’s toothbrush)
  • A clean microfiber or lint-free polishing cloth

Instructions:

1.Mix the Solution:

Pour warm water into the bowl and add a few drops of mild dish soap, stirring gently until the water becomes lightly soapy.
2.Soak Your Jewelry:

Place your jewelry into the soapy water and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. This softens and loosens dried lotions, body oils, and stubborn grime trapped in settings.
3.Gently Clean Details:

Take each piece out and use the soft-bristled toothbrush to very gently brush around settings, underneath stones, and along links where dirt hides. Avoid scrubbing aggressively.
4.Rinse Thoroughly:

Rinse the jewelry thoroughly under warm running water. (Tip: Always plug your sink drain first so nothing accidentally slips down the drain!)
5.Buff Dry:

Pat the jewelry dry with a clean microfiber cloth and buff gently to restore a brilliant shine.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • Know Your Gemstones: Softer or porous stones like pearls, opals, turquoise, and emeralds should never be soaked in water, exposed to dish soap, or scrubbed with a brush. They require specialized, extremely gentle care.
  • Costume Jewelry: Glued-on rhinestones and plated costume pieces can loosen or have their finishes stripped by prolonged soaking. Wipe them gently with a damp cloth instead.
  • Skip Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using bleach, chlorine, or abrasive toothpastes, which can pit precious metals, strip plating, and scratch delicate surfaces.
