“Doctors Warn: Limit These 4 Foods Because They Contain Parasites” — Is It True?
This headline is misleading. There isn’t a standard medical warning that people should immediately stop eating four particular foods because they are “full of parasites.”
However, some foods can carry parasites or other harmful germs when they are raw, undercooked, unwashed, or contaminated. The CDC identifies higher-risk choices such as raw/undercooked meat and seafood, unwashed produce, raw sprouts, and unpasteurized milk or dairy products. CDC+1
Foods particularly associated with foodborne parasites include:
- Raw or undercooked meat — certain parasites, such as Trichinella, can be transmitted through contaminated meat. CDC+1
- Raw or undercooked fish and shellfish — some parasites can be transmitted through inadequately cooked seafood. CDC
- Unwashed fruits and vegetables — contamination can occur through contaminated soil or water.
- Raw aquatic plants or contaminated vegetables — certain parasitic infections can be acquired from contaminated produce. CDC
🛡️ How to reduce the risk
The simplest approach is clean, separate, cook, and chill: wash produce under running water, prevent cross-contamination, cook meat and seafood properly, and refrigerate perishable foods promptly. CDC
So, you don’t need to eliminate four ordinary foods from your diet because of this viral claim. Proper food handling and cooking are much more important.
