Everyone Should Unplug This Kitchen Appliance Before Going to Sleep to Prevent a Fire

🔥 Which Kitchen Appliance Should You Unplug Before Bed?

There isn’t one universal appliance that every household must unplug. However, small kitchen appliances that generate significant heat deserve particular attention because a malfunction, damaged cord, or nearby combustible material can create a fire hazard.

Common examples include:

  • Toasters

  • Toaster ovens

  • Air fryers

  • Electric kettles

  • Slow cookers

  • Coffee makers

  • Countertop grills

The important rule

If an appliance heats up, don’t leave it operating unattended unless it is specifically designed and rated for that use. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions about whether it can safely remain plugged in.

Before going to bed:

  • Turn off appliances that aren’t designed to run unattended.

  • Unplug heat-producing countertop appliances when practical.

  • Check cords and plugs for fraying, cracking, melting, or overheating.

  • Keep appliances away from curtains, paper towels, and other combustible materials.

  • Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.

  • Make sure smoke alarms are working.

Never unplug an appliance by pulling on its cord. Grip the plug instead.

And if you see a headline claiming that one specific appliance is responsible for most kitchen fires, treat that claim cautiously—the actual risk varies by appliance, condition, usage, and electrical installation.
