10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should Never Ignore

🧠 10 Early Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore

Dementia isn’t a normal part of aging. It describes a decline in memory, thinking, or reasoning that interferes with everyday life. Early symptoms can be subtle, and one occasional lapse doesn’t mean someone has dementia.

10 possible early warning signs

  1. Memory problems that disrupt daily life — repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or newly learned information.
  2. Difficulty planning or solving problems — struggling with familiar bills, recipes, finances, or following a previously familiar plan.
  3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks — becoming confused while doing routine activities at home or work.
  4. Getting confused about time or place — losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are.
  5. Trouble with familiar visual or spatial tasks — difficulty judging distances, reading, or recognizing familiar objects.
  6. New problems with speaking or writing — struggling to find common words or follow a conversation.
  7. Misplacing things in unusual ways — putting objects in inappropriate places and being unable to retrace their steps.
  8. Poorer judgment — making unusual financial decisions, falling for scams, or neglecting personal safety.
  9. Withdrawing from activities — losing interest in hobbies, social activities, or work they previously enjoyed.
  10. Changes in personality or mood — unusual anxiety, irritability, suspicion, apathy, or emotional changes.

⚠️ Don’t assume it’s dementia

Memory and concentration problems can also result from depression, poor sleep, medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, infections, hearing/vision problems, or other medical conditions. Some of these are treatable.

If changes are persistent, progressively worsening, or interfering with daily activities, arrange a medical evaluation rather than trying to diagnose dementia at home.

And if confusion develops suddenly over hours or days, that’s different—it can be delirium, which may indicate an urgent medical problem and needs prompt medical attention.
