7 signs that indicate your heart is in serious danger

If you’re referring to a health-information post, the key point is that heart problems don’t always produce obvious symptoms, and some warning signs require emergency care.

7 warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored

  1. Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain — especially if it lasts several minutes, returns, or occurs with exertion.
  2. Shortness of breath — particularly when it is new, severe, or occurs at rest.
  3. Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen — a possible sign of a heart attack.
  4. Unexplained sweating, nausea, or vomiting — especially when occurring with chest discomfort.
  5. Fainting or near-fainting — can sometimes indicate an abnormal heart rhythm or reduced blood flow.
  6. New or worsening swelling of the legs or ankles — can occur with heart failure, although there are many other possible causes.
  7. Unusual, persistent fatigue or reduced ability to exercise — particularly when this represents a significant change from your normal level.

Don’t wait with possible heart-attack symptoms

If someone has chest pressure/pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms accompanied by cold sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm/jaw/back, seek emergency medical help immediately. Heart attacks can present differently in women, older adults, and people with diabetes, sometimes without dramatic chest pain.

These symptoms don’t prove that the heart is in danger—many have other causes. But they shouldn’t be dismissed, particularly when they’re sudden, severe, or new.
