🛏️ What Risks Do You Run When You Sleep on Your Right Side?

For most healthy people, sleeping on your right side is safe. There is no general medical rule that you should avoid it.

However, your sleeping position can affect certain conditions:

  • Acid reflux: Right-side sleeping can worsen reflux for some people. Sleeping on the left side often reduces nighttime reflux symptoms.
  • Shoulder or hip pain: Staying on one side for hours can aggravate pain or pressure in that shoulder or hip.
  • Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally recommended later in pregnancy, although the ideal position can depend on the individual and stage of pregnancy.
  • Sleep apnea: Sleeping on either side is often preferable to sleeping flat on your back because side sleeping can help keep the airway more open in some people.

❤️ What about the heart?

You may see claims that sleeping on your right side is dangerous for the heart or that it “cuts off circulation.” For most people, there is no good evidence for this. If you have heart disease, your clinician may recommend a particular position based on your symptoms, but right-side sleeping isn’t inherently harmful.

When should you change position?

If right-side sleeping consistently causes heartburn, pain, numbness, shortness of breath, or poor sleep, try another position and discuss persistent symptoms with a healthcare professional.

Bottom line: If you’re comfortable and sleeping well on your right side, there’s generally no reason to worry.
