6 Foods That Help Increase Muscle Mass and Support Strength

💪 6 Foods That Can Help Build Muscle and Support Strength

Food alone won’t build substantial muscle—resistance training plus adequate protein and calories is the key. But choosing nutritious protein-rich foods can make it much easier to maintain and build muscle.

  1. 🥚 Eggs
Eggs provide high-quality protein and all essential amino acids. They’re also a convenient source of nutrients such as vitamin B12 and choline.
  2. 🐟 Fish
Salmon, tuna, sardines, and other fish provide protein. Fatty fish also supply omega-3 fats, which are useful as part of an overall healthy diet.
  3. 🍗 Chicken and other lean meats
Lean poultry and meat provide substantial protein without requiring very large portions.
  4. 🥛 Greek yogurt and other dairy foods
Greek yogurt is rich in protein, while milk provides protein along with calcium and other nutrients. Choose products that fit your calorie and dietary needs.
  5. 🫘 Beans and lentils
These provide plant protein, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, and other nutrients. Combining different plant protein sources throughout the day can help provide a broad amino-acid profile.
  6. 🥜 Nuts and seeds
Almonds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and similar foods provide protein, healthy fats, and calories—useful if you’re trying to gain weight as well as muscle. They’re calorie-dense, so portions matter.

🏋️ The important part

For muscle growth, aim to get adequate protein spread across the day and pair it with progressive resistance exercise. Older adults in particular may benefit from paying attention to protein intake and strength training because muscle mass naturally declines with age.

You don’t need expensive powders or “muscle-building” foods. A varied diet containing sufficient protein, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats can support strength very well.

If you have kidney disease or another condition requiring protein restriction, check with your healthcare professional before deliberately increasing protein intake.
