What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

There isn’t a single “normal blood pressure” number for every age. For adults, healthy blood pressure targets are generally similar across age groups, rather than increasing automatically as you get older.

Adult blood pressure guide

Blood pressure Systolic Diastolic
Normal <120 <80
Elevated 120–129 <80
High blood pressure — stage 1 130–139 80–89
High blood pressure — stage 2 ≥140 ≥90
Severe hypertension >180 and/or >120

For children and teenagers, blood-pressure interpretation is different: age, sex, and height are taken into account rather than using the adult cutoffs.

A single high reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have hypertension. Rest quietly for about 5 minutes, use an appropriately sized cuff, keep your arm supported, and take repeated readings on different occasions.

If a reading is over 180/120, repeat it after a minute or two. If it remains that high, contact a healthcare professional promptly. If it’s accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness/numbness, vision changes, severe headache, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care.

Also, don’t assume that a higher blood pressure is “normal for your age.” Persistent hypertension deserves assessment because treating it can reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other complications.
