Visible Blue Veins After 60: What Your Blood Flow Is Screaming

## Visible Blue Veins After 60: What They Can Mean

Seeing more **blue or green veins under the skin after age 60 is often a normal part of aging** and does not necessarily mean that your blood flow is poor.

### Why veins become more visible

– **Thinner skin:** With age, skin becomes thinner and loses some of its underlying fat, making superficial veins easier to see.
– **Less subcutaneous fat:** Reduced tissue beneath the skin can make veins appear more prominent.
– **Sun exposure:** Long-term sun damage can thin and alter the skin.
– **Exercise or heat:** Veins can temporarily become more prominent when blood vessels dilate.
– **Varicose veins:** Enlarged, twisted veins—especially in the legs—can indicate problems with the valves that help return blood toward the heart.

### When visible veins may need attention

Visible veins deserve medical assessment when they are accompanied by:

– Leg swelling, especially around the ankles
– Aching, heaviness, burning, or itching in the legs
– Skin discoloration or thickening around the ankles
– A vein that becomes **suddenly painful, hard, red, or warm**
– A new prominent vein accompanied by significant swelling of one leg

**Sudden swelling and pain in one leg**, particularly with chest pain or shortness of breath, can be a medical emergency because a blood clot may have traveled to the lungs.

### What you can do

For generally healthy legs, regular walking, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising the calf muscles can support circulation. If you have persistent swelling or symptomatic varicose veins, a clinician can examine the veins and determine whether testing such as a Doppler ultrasound is appropriate.

**Bottom line:** Blue veins by themselves usually aren’t a sign that your circulation is “screaming.” The **newness of the change and accompanying symptoms** are much more important than the color of the veins.
