The gynecologist explains what happens to the female body when there is a long period of intimacy: Many women are ashamed to admit this.

If by “a long period of intimacy” you mean a long period without sexual intercourse, there is no medically defined point at which a woman’s body becomes damaged or “needs” sex.

Some things that can happen are:

  • No dangerous buildup occurs. Semen does not accumulate in the body, and the vagina does not become “dirty” or permanently closed.

  • Sexual desire can change. Libido varies naturally with hormones, stress, relationships, medications, age, and many other factors.

  • Vaginal dryness can occur, particularly around menopause or with certain medications. Lack of sex itself isn’t generally the cause.

  • If intercourse resumes after a long gap, some women may experience temporary discomfort, especially if there isn’t enough arousal or lubrication. A water- or silicone-based lubricant can help.

  • Pelvic-floor muscles don’t simply “weaken” because someone isn’t having sex.

  • There is no health requirement to have intercourse. A person can remain sexually inactive for months or years without this, by itself, causing a medical problem.

If someone has persistent vaginal pain, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, severe dryness, or other new symptoms, those deserve evaluation rather than being attributed simply to sexual inactivity.
