5 Drinks That May Be Harmful to Bone Health
Not every drink affects bones in the same way, and the evidence varies by beverage. However, health professionals commonly recommend limiting these drinks—particularly when they replace calcium- and protein-rich options.
- Sugary soft drinks 🥤
Frequent consumption is associated with poorer diet quality and, in some studies, lower bone mineral density. Cola may be of particular concern, although the evidence doesn’t prove that cola directly causes osteoporosis. - Excessive alcohol 🍺
Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with bone formation and calcium regulation and is associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures. - Energy drinks ⚡
Many contain substantial amounts of caffeine and added sugar. The bigger concern is when they displace nutritious beverages or contribute to excessive caffeine intake. - Very high amounts of caffeinated drinks ☕
Large amounts of caffeine may slightly reduce calcium absorption. For most people, moderate coffee or tea consumption is not considered a major threat to bone health when calcium intake is adequate. - Sugary fruit drinks and sweetened beverages 🧃
These can add substantial amounts of sugar without providing much calcium, protein, or other nutrients important for maintaining healthy bones.
Better choices for your bones
Choose milk or fortified plant milk, plain yogurt drinks, water, and calcium- and vitamin-D-fortified beverages more often. Also make sure your overall diet provides enough calcium, vitamin D, and protein.
Important: It isn’t accurate to say that these drinks will simply “destroy your bones.” Bone health depends on the overall diet, physical activity, age, medications, alcohol intake, and other health factors.
