Stroke: Signs That May Appear Beforehand

A common claim is that there are specific symptoms that reliably appear one month before a stroke. That’s misleading. A stroke can happen suddenly, and there is no reliable one-month warning period.

However, some people experience a transient ischemic attack (TIA) before an ischemic stroke. A TIA produces stroke-like symptoms that usually resolve within minutes to hours. It is a medical emergency and a warning sign, not something to wait on.

Watch for sudden:

  • Numbness or weakness, particularly on one side of the face or body

  • Trouble speaking or understanding speech

  • Vision loss or sudden double/blurred vision

  • Difficulty walking, severe dizziness, or loss of balance

  • A sudden, unusually severe headache, especially when accompanied by other neurological symptoms

🚨 Remember FAST

F — Face: one side droops when smiling
A — Arm: one arm becomes weak or numb
S — Speech: speech becomes slurred or difficult
T — Time: call emergency medical services immediately

Do not wait for symptoms to improve. Even if symptoms disappear after a few minutes, a TIA requires urgent medical evaluation because it can precede a major stroke.

If someone is experiencing these symptoms right now, seek emergency medical care immediately.
