If you have these lines on your nails after 40, it is a clear sign that..

If you mean the viral claim about lines or ridges on fingernails after age 40, there isn’t one specific nail line that is automatically a “clear sign” of a disease or deficiency.

  • Vertical ridges (running from the cuticle toward the tip) become more common with aging and are often harmless.
  • Horizontal grooves/lines (Beau’s lines) can occur when nail growth is temporarily interrupted—for example, after significant illness, injury, severe stress, or certain medications.
  • A dark or brown line on one nail is different. It can sometimes be caused by harmless pigmentation or injury, but a new or changing dark streak should be evaluated by a dermatologist because, rarely, it can indicate subungual melanoma.
  • Nails that become very pale, blue, yellow, thickened, spoon-shaped, or separated from the nail bed can sometimes accompany medical conditions, but the nail appearance alone isn’t enough to diagnose them.

So, being over 40 and having nail lines does not by itself mean you have a vitamin deficiency, heart disease, or another serious illness.

If you describe what the lines look like (vertical, horizontal, white, or dark) or upload a photo, I can explain what that particular pattern commonly means.
