If you’re referring to lines or ridges on the nails after age 40, they are not automatically a clear sign of a disease or deficiency.
-
Vertical ridges (from the cuticle toward the tip) are common with aging and are often harmless.
-
Horizontal grooves/lines (across the nail) can sometimes occur after illness, significant stress, injury, or interruption of nail growth.
-
Lines accompanied by changes in nail color, pain, swelling, nail separation, or a dark streak should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
If you send me a photo of the nail lines, I can explain what type they appear to be and what commonly causes them.
