If you have a heart attack at home, do this in 10 seconds and you can save your life.(1 / 2)

If you mean the viral claim about what to do during a heart attack at home, there is no 10-second trick that can reliably save your life. Do not try to cough forcefully, repeatedly bang your chest, or perform other internet “heart attack hacks.”

If you think you’re having a heart attack

  1. Call your local emergency medical service immediately. Don’t drive yourself if an ambulance is available.
  2. Stop what you’re doing and sit or lie down somewhere safe.
  3. Unlock the door and keep your phone nearby so responders can reach you.
  4. If you have been prescribed nitroglycerin for angina, take it exactly as instructed.
  5. Ask an emergency dispatcher about aspirin. Chewing an aspirin may be appropriate for some adults with suspected heart attack, but it isn’t safe for everyone (for example, people with certain allergies or bleeding problems).

If the person becomes unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally, someone should call emergency services and start CPR, using an AED if one is available.

Chest pressure/pain, shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw can all be signs of a heart attack. Don’t wait for symptoms to disappear.
