Honestly, Does Anyone Here Actually Eat Brussels Sprouts?

Yes—more people eat Brussels sprouts than you might think! 😄 These little green vegetables have a bad reputation from the days when they were commonly overboiled, which can produce a strong sulfur-like smell and an unpleasant, bitter taste.

But when prepared properly, Brussels sprouts can be surprisingly delicious.

Why are Brussels sprouts worth eating?

Brussels sprouts are a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, alongside broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. They’re naturally low in calories while providing several useful nutrients, including:

  • Fiber, which supports healthy digestion and helps you feel full.

  • Vitamin C, which contributes to normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

  • Vitamin K, which plays an important role in normal blood clotting and bone health.

  • Folate, which is needed for normal cell division and blood-cell formation.

  • Various plant compounds, including glucosinolates, that are characteristic of cruciferous vegetables.

The secret is in the preparation

If you think you hate Brussels sprouts, the cooking method may be the culprit.

Roasting: Halve them, coat lightly with oil, season, and roast until the outer leaves become browned and crispy.

Sautéing: Slice them thinly and cook them in a hot pan with olive oil or butter. Garlic, lemon, black pepper, or a little Parmesan can add plenty of flavor.

Air frying: This can produce particularly crispy edges without requiring much oil.

Steaming: A good option if you prefer softer vegetables, but avoid overcooking them.

One thing to keep in mind is that Brussels sprouts contain fermentable carbohydrates and fiber, so eating a large amount at once can cause gas or bloating in some people. Starting with a modest portion can make them easier to tolerate.

So, if your childhood experience with Brussels sprouts involved a plate of gray, soggy vegetables, they may deserve a second chance. 🥦😋
