Common Mistakes That Affect Balance in Older Adults

Balance naturally can become more challenging with age, but some everyday habits can make the problem worse and increase the risk of falls.

  • Being too inactive: Avoiding movement can weaken the legs and core and further reduce balance.
  • Skipping strength and balance exercises: Regular, appropriate exercises can help maintain muscle strength, coordination, and stability.
  • Wearing unsafe footwear: Loose slippers, high heels, or worn-out soles can make slipping or tripping more likely.
  • Ignoring vision problems: Poor vision can make it harder to judge steps, obstacles, and changes in the ground.
  • Getting up too quickly: Standing suddenly can cause lightheadedness, particularly in people taking blood-pressure medicines.
  • Walking in poor lighting: Dark hallways, stairs, and bathrooms can hide obstacles.
  • Leaving clutter on floors: Loose rugs, electrical cords, and other objects create common tripping hazards.
  • Ignoring dizziness or unsteadiness: Recurrent balance problems deserve medical evaluation rather than simply being accepted as a normal part of aging.
  • Taking medicines without reviewing them: Some medications can cause dizziness, sleepiness, or low blood pressure. A clinician or pharmacist can review medications for fall risk.
  • Trying to manage a fall risk alone: If someone is frequently unsteady, using an appropriate walking aid and getting a professional assessment can be safer than struggling without support.

🚨 Pay attention to sudden changes

Sudden loss of balance, especially with weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, severe headache, vision changes, or confusion, can be a sign of a stroke and requires emergency medical attention.

For ongoing balance problems, a healthcare professional can look for potentially treatable causes and recommend appropriate strength, balance, or physical-therapy exercises.
