That’s a viral cleaning hack, and the basic idea can work—but using a dishwasher tablet directly on an oven has some important caveats.
🧽 Dishwasher-tablet oven cleaning
For a cool, conventional oven:
-
Remove the racks and loose crumbs.
-
Put on rubber gloves.
-
Dissolve one dishwasher tablet in a bowl of very hot water.
-
Dip a microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge into the solution.
-
Wipe the greasy oven surfaces, allowing stubborn buildup to soften for several minutes.
-
Wipe again with clean water until all detergent residue is gone.
-
Dry the surfaces before using the oven.
⚠️ Don’t do this
-
Don’t put a dishwasher tablet directly on the oven floor and heat the oven.
-
Don’t use the solution on heating elements, fans, electrical components, or exposed seals.
-
Don’t use abrasive scrubbing pads on surfaces that can scratch.
-
Don’t mix the dishwasher detergent with bleach, ammonia, or other cleaning chemicals.
-
Check your oven’s manual first—some ovens have special catalytic or other self-cleaning surfaces that shouldn’t be treated with detergents.
A dishwasher tablet is formulated to break down food grease, so its cleaning agents can be effective. But “the oven will be like new” is marketing language—very old, carbonized deposits may still require a dedicated oven cleaner or repeated cleaning.
