Didn’t realize I’ve been doing it wrong the entire time! Gonna try this tonight

I found the viral post behind this headline. It’s about sleeping position, specifically switching to side sleeping, with the post emphasizing the left side. It claims benefits for digestion, heart health, snoring/sleep apnea, back and neck pain, and pregnancy. POPULARNEWS

Here’s a detailed, more accurate version:

The Sleep Position I Didn’t Know I Was Doing Wrong

Didn’t Realize I’d Been Doing It Wrong the Entire Time! Gonna Try This Tonight 😴

I never really thought about my sleeping position. As long as I was comfortable and eventually fell asleep, I assumed it didn’t make much difference.

But your sleeping position can affect breathing, reflux, comfort, and pressure on different parts of your body. That doesn’t mean there’s one “perfect” position for everyone—but a small adjustment may make a noticeable difference for some people.

Tonight, I’m going to try something simple: sleeping on my side, using pillows to keep my neck and spine comfortable.

Why side sleeping can be helpful

One of the biggest potential benefits of side sleeping is its effect on breathing.

When you’re lying on your back, gravity can allow the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to move backward and narrow the airway. For some people, this can make snoring worse.

Side sleeping may help keep the airway more open and can reduce snoring for some people. It is also commonly recommended as a positional strategy for people whose obstructive sleep apnea is worse when sleeping on their back.

However, changing your sleeping position doesn’t cure sleep apnea. If you regularly snore loudly, gasp or choke during sleep, stop breathing during the night, or feel excessively sleepy during the day, it’s worth talking to a healthcare professional.

What about sleeping on the left side?

This is where many viral posts make the claim sound more dramatic than the evidence supports.

For people who experience nighttime acid reflux, sleeping on the left side may reduce reflux compared with sleeping on the right side or back. The position of the stomach and esophagus makes this a plausible and useful strategy for some people.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to sleep exclusively on their left side.

If you’re comfortable sleeping on your right side and don’t have reflux problems, there’s no need to force yourself to switch.

Does it improve digestion?

You may see claims online that left-side sleeping dramatically improves digestion or helps the body “flush out toxins” overnight.

That’s an exaggeration.

Your digestive system doesn’t suddenly become more efficient simply because you turn onto your left side. The strongest reason to consider left-side sleeping is reflux relief, not a magical digestive cleanse.
