7 Early Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease You Should Know

Occasional forgetfulness is common, particularly with aging. Alzheimer’s disease is more concerning when memory or thinking problems are persistent and begin interfering with everyday life.

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life — repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or newly learned information.

  2. Difficulty planning or solving problems — struggling with familiar tasks such as managing bills, following a recipe, or keeping track of medications.

  3. Trouble completing familiar activities — difficulty driving to familiar places, using a familiar appliance, or carrying out a routine task.

  4. Confusion about time or place — losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are.

  5. Problems with words or conversations — frequently losing track of a conversation, struggling to find familiar words, or repeating themselves.

  6. Misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps — putting objects in unusual places and becoming unable to work out where they went.

  7. Changes in judgment, personality, or social behavior — unusual financial decisions, reduced judgment, withdrawal, anxiety, irritability, or other noticeable changes.

One important distinction

These symptoms don’t automatically mean Alzheimer’s. Depression, sleep problems, medication effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, hearing/vision problems, and other medical conditions can produce similar difficulties.

If cognitive changes are new, progressive, or affecting independence, arrange a medical evaluation. Sudden confusion or sudden difficulty speaking, moving, or understanding is different—it can indicate a stroke and requires emergency medical attention.
