How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be stubborn, but they often can be improved or removed with the right treatment. The key is to break down the oil before washing and, most importantly, avoid putting the garment in the dryer until the stain is gone.
What you’ll need
-
Liquid dishwashing detergent
-
Baking soda, optional
-
An old soft toothbrush or clean cloth
-
Warm water
-
Your regular laundry detergent
Step-by-step method
-
Check the care label. Make sure the fabric can safely be treated and washed with water.
-
Apply dish soap directly to the stain. Use enough to completely cover the greasy area. Dish soap is designed to break down grease.
-
Gently work it in. Massage the detergent into the stain with your fingers or gently brush it with a soft toothbrush. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can damage fabric fibers.
-
Let it sit. Leave the detergent on the stain for 15–30 minutes. For an older, particularly stubborn stain, you can let it sit longer if the fabric-care instructions permit.
-
Rinse with warm water. Use the warmest water recommended on the garment’s care label.
-
Wash normally. Add your usual laundry detergent and wash according to the care label.
-
Inspect before drying. If you can still see the grease, repeat the treatment. Don’t tumble-dry or iron the garment while the stain remains, because heat can make it even harder to remove.
For very stubborn stains
After applying dish soap, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the area and gently work it into the detergent. Let it sit before washing. Test this approach on an inconspicuous area first, particularly with dark or delicate fabrics.
Important: Never mix cleaning products such as bleach, ammonia, or other chemicals unless the product label specifically says they can be combined. For silk, wool, leather, or dry-clean-only garments, it’s safer to follow the care label or use a professional cleaner.
