Nighttime urination is called nocturia. How often is considered typical changes with age:
-
Younger adults: Usually 0–1 time per night.
-
Adults around 60–70: 1–2 times per night becomes more common.
-
Adults over 70: 1–3 times can occur, although frequent waking isn’t necessarily something you should simply accept as “normal.”
What matters is also how often it happens and why. Waking 2 or more times every night, especially if this is new or worsening, may be worth discussing with a doctor. Possible causes include drinking fluids late in the evening, caffeine or alcohol, enlarged prostate, diabetes, urinary problems, sleep apnea, certain medications, or heart/kidney conditions.
Seek medical attention promptly if nighttime urination is accompanied by blood in the urine, pain/burning, fever, severe thirst, swelling, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden major change in urination.
