Lou Gehrig’s syndrome: Here are the first symptoms of this disease

Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS): Early Symptoms to Know

Lou Gehrig’s disease, medically called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurological disease that damages motor neurons—the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles. Early symptoms can be subtle and vary considerably between people. Mayo Clinic+1

Common early symptoms include:

  1. Muscle weakness — often beginning in one hand, arm, foot, or leg.

  2. Hand clumsiness — difficulty buttoning clothes, gripping objects, or performing familiar tasks.

  3. Tripping or difficulty walking — including weakness around the feet or ankles.

  4. Muscle twitching or cramps — particularly when they occur along with progressive weakness.

  5. Slurred speech — ALS can initially affect the muscles used for speaking.

  6. Difficulty swallowing or chewing — sometimes an early feature when ALS begins in the muscles involved in speech and swallowing.

  7. Stiffness or abnormal muscle movements — weakness can occur alongside increased muscle stiffness or jerking. Mayo Clinic+1

  8. Changes in emotional expression or behavior — inappropriate laughing or crying can occur in some people, and some develop cognitive or behavioral changes. Mayo Clinic

Important: these symptoms don’t mean you have ALS

Muscle twitching, cramps, weakness, or difficulty walking have many possible causes, including nerve compression, medication effects, nutritional problems, and other neurological conditions. ALS is diagnosed through a neurological examination and tests such as EMG/nerve-conduction studies, while doctors also work to rule out other conditions. Mayo Clinic+1

If you have progressive, unexplained muscle weakness, particularly if it’s interfering with walking, hand function, speaking, or swallowing, arrange an evaluation with a healthcare professional or neurologist rather than trying to diagnose ALS from symptoms alone.
