Burnt-on grease and baked-on food can make an oven look impossible to clean, but you usually don’t need aggressive scrubbing. The key is to soften the buildup first, then wipe it away.
The easiest method
You’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Dishwashing liquid
- Warm water
- A spray bottle
- Non-scratch sponge or cloth
- Old toothbrush for corners
Step 1: Let the oven cool completely
Turn the oven off and allow it to cool. Remove the racks and any loose crumbs.
Never mix cleaning chemicals, especially bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
Step 2: Make a cleaning paste
Mix baking soda with a little water until you have a thick paste. For greasy areas, adding a small amount of dishwashing liquid can help break down the grease.
Spread the paste over the stubborn, burnt-on areas. Avoid coating heating elements, gas burners, vents, or electrical components.
Step 3: Give it time to work
Leave the paste on for several hours or overnight if the buildup is particularly stubborn. The goal is to soften the residue rather than attack it with force.
Step 4: Wipe and gently scrub
Use a damp, non-scratch sponge or cloth to remove the softened grime. For corners and edges, an old toothbrush can help.
For extremely stubborn spots, a plastic scraper can loosen the residue without scratching the oven’s surface.
