Air Fryer Ham and Cheese sandwich

Ingredients & Ratios

  • Bread: 2 thick slices of sturdy bread (sourdough, brioche, or rustic white work best to stand up to the air frying process)
  • Meat: 3 to 4 ounces of deli ham (black forest, honey ham, or smoked ham), sliced thin
  • Cheese: 2 slices of good-melting cheese (such as sharp cheddar, gruyère, swiss, or provolone)
  • Spread: 1 tablespoon of softened butter or mayonnaise (for the exterior crust) and Dijon mustard or honey mustard (for the interior spread)
Step-by-Step Preparation
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (180°C) for about 3 to 5 minutes to ensure an immediate, even crisp on the bread.
  2. Assemble the sandwich by laying the two bread slices flat on a clean surface. Spread a thin layer of Dijon or honey mustard on the inside of each slice.
  3. Layer the ingredients starting with a slice of cheese on the bottom bread piece, followed by the folded deli ham piled evenly, and topped with the second slice of cheese (using cheese on both sides acts as a “glue” to hold the sandwich together and prevents the bread from getting soggy). Place the top slice of bread on to complete the sandwich.
  4. Coat the exterior by spreading a thin, even layer of softened butter or mayonnaise across the top and bottom outer crusts. Mayonnaise often yields an exceptionally golden and crispy exterior due to its oil and egg composition.
  5. Secure the sandwich if you are using lightweight bread, as the high-velocity fan inside the air fryer can sometimes blow the top crust off. A toothpick inserted diagonally can hold it in place (remove before eating).
  6. Air fry at 360°F for 3 minutes, then carefully open the basket, flip the sandwich over to ensure even browning, and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until the bread is deeply golden brown and the cheese is completely melted and bubbling.
Pro-Tips for Perfection
  • Weighting the sandwich: If your air fryer fan is exceptionally powerful and keeps lifting the top bread, place a small, oven-safe metal rack or a perforated parchment paper square with a small weight on top for the first 2 minutes of cooking.
  • Cheese selection: Avoid ultra-thin pre-packaged deli slices if you prefer a rich, gooey center; thicker-cut deli counter cheese or freshly grated blocks melt much more smoothly under concentrated dry heat.
  • Flavor enhancements: Add a thin layer of fig jam, cranberry sauce, or thinly sliced tart apples (like Granny Smith) inside the sandwich to balance the salty, savory notes of the ham and rich melted cheese.
