If you’re seeing a claim that you can “clean 15 kg of waste from your colon in one night,” that’s misleading and potentially dangerous.
Your colon doesn’t normally contain anything close to 15 kg of accumulated “waste” that needs to be detoxed. The digestive system continually moves stool through the bowel, and your liver and kidneys handle much of the body’s waste processing.
What you can safely do for constipation
- Drink adequate fluids.
- Gradually increase dietary fiber from vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains.
- Stay physically active.
- Give yourself enough uninterrupted time to use the bathroom.
- If needed, a pharmacist or clinician can recommend an appropriate constipation treatment.
Avoid aggressive “colon cleanses,” coffee enemas, salt-water flushes, or large amounts of laxatives unless they’re specifically recommended for a medical procedure. They can cause dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, infection, or bowel injury.
If you have severe or persistent constipation, significant abdominal pain or swelling, vomiting, blood in the stool, or you cannot pass stool or gas, seek medical care rather than attempting a cleanse.
