Here’s What Really Happens When You Sleep with Socks On

🧦 What really happens when you sleep with socks on?

For most people, sleeping with socks on is completely safe and may even make it easier to fall asleep.

Potential benefits

  • Warmer feet may help you fall asleep. Warming the feet can promote heat loss from the hands and feet, which is part of the body’s normal process of lowering core temperature before sleep.
  • It can be comfortable in cold weather. Warm feet may make it easier to relax.
  • It may help people with cold feet. This can be particularly sleeping in very tight compression socks unless your healthcare professional has specifically recommended them for nighttime useful during colder nights.

Is there a downside?

Usually not, provided the socks are clean, dry and loose enough not to restrict circulation.

Avoid sleeping in very tight compression socks unless your healthcare professional has specifically recommended them for nighttime use. Tight or unsuitable socks can cause discomfort and may leave marks on the skin.

If you have poor circulation, diabetes, reduced sensation in your feet, or recurring foot wounds, ask your clinician what type of socks are appropriate and check your feet regularly for redness, blisters or pressure injuries.

Bottom line

You don’t need to take your socks off to protect your health. If wearing comfortable socks helps you sleep, there’s generally no reason to stop. And if you prefer sleeping barefoot, that’s perfectly fine too.
