That headline is misleading and potentially dangerous. Your colon does not normally contain 15 kilograms of “waste” that needs to be cleaned out overnight. There is also no safe home drink or food that can “detox” or cleanse the colon in one night.
What actually helps constipation
If your goal is simply to empty your bowels more comfortably:
- Drink adequate fluids, unless a doctor has told you to restrict fluids.
- Eat more fiber gradually—vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans and lentils.
- Stay physically active within your abilities.
- Establish a regular toilet routine and don’t repeatedly ignore the urge to go.
- If constipation persists, a pharmacist or doctor can recommend an appropriate laxative. Don’t take large doses of laxatives or multiple products together to try to “flush” your colon.
Colon cleanses, enemas and strong laxatives can cause dehydration and dangerous electrolyte disturbances, and they can be particularly risky in older adults or people with kidney or heart problems.
At 83, if you have new or persistent constipation, it’s better to identify the cause rather than attempt an overnight cleanse. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, black stools, or inability to pass stool or gas warrants prompt medical attention.
