7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

Arthritis isn’t one disease—there are many types, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and others. Early evaluation is worthwhile because some forms can be treated more effectively when addressed early.

1. Persistent joint pain

Pain that repeatedly occurs in a joint, particularly during or after activity, can be a sign of osteoarthritis or another joint condition.

2. Joint stiffness

Stiffness after waking or after sitting still is common. Morning stiffness lasting longer than about 30–60 minutes can be particularly suggestive of inflammatory arthritis.

3. Swelling or warmth

A joint that becomes swollen, warm, or tender may be inflamed. Recurrent swelling deserves evaluation.

4. Reduced range of motion

Difficulty fully bending, straightening, or moving a joint can occur as arthritis progresses.

5. Grinding, clicking, or cracking with pain

Joint noises alone are often harmless, but noises accompanied by pain, swelling, or loss of movement are more concerning.

6. Symptoms affecting several joints

Pain or swelling in multiple joints—especially the hands, wrists, feet, or knees—can occur with inflammatory forms such as rheumatoid arthritis.

7. Symptoms that interfere with daily life

Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, opening jars, dressing, or sleeping because of joint pain is a good reason to seek medical assessment.

🚨 When it’s urgent

A suddenly very painful, red, hot, swollen joint, particularly with fever or feeling very unwell, shouldn’t simply be assumed to be arthritis. It can indicate an infection or another condition requiring urgent treatment.

Also, arthritis symptoms don’t necessarily mean you need to avoid exercise. Appropriately chosen movement and strengthening exercises are often important parts of treatment. A doctor or physiotherapist can help determine which activities are suitable for your particular joint problem.
