Arthritis isn’t one single disease. There are many forms—including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and others—so symptoms can look different. Persistent joint symptoms deserve attention, especially when they interfere with daily activities.

1. Persistent joint pain

Pain that keeps returning or lasts for weeks—especially with movement or after periods of inactivity—shouldn’t simply be dismissed as “getting older.”

2. Joint stiffness

Stiffness after waking or sitting for a long time can occur with arthritis. Morning stiffness lasting more than about 30 minutes, particularly when accompanied by swelling, can warrant evaluation for inflammatory arthritis.

3. Swelling around a joint

A joint that repeatedly becomes swollen may be inflamed. Sudden, very painful swelling can also occur with conditions such as gout.

4. Reduced range of motion

Difficulty fully bending, straightening, or moving a joint can indicate an underlying joint problem.

5. Warmth or redness

A warm, red, swollen joint can occur with inflammatory arthritis—but a suddenly hot, extremely painful joint with fever can be a joint infection and requires urgent medical attention.

6. Multiple joints becoming painful or swollen

Pain and swelling affecting several joints, particularly on both sides of the body, can be a feature of inflammatory arthritis and should be assessed.

7. Joint symptoms affecting everyday life

Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, gripping objects, dressing, or sleeping because of joint symptoms is a good reason to seek medical advice.

🚨 Don’t assume every joint pain is arthritis

Joint pain can also result from injuries, infections, nerve problems, bursitis, or other conditions. A healthcare professional may use your symptoms, physical examination, blood tests, or imaging to determine the cause.

Seek urgent care for a suddenly swollen/red/hot joint accompanied by fever, severe unexplained joint pain, or inability to use the affected joint.

And while there is no cure-all food or vitamin that “rebuilds” worn cartilage, regular appropriate exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and evidence-based treatment can help many people manage arthritis symptoms and preserve function.
