6 Foods That Help Build Muscle and Support Strength

Food alone doesn’t build muscle—you also need progressive resistance training, adequate calories, and enough protein. But these foods can make it easier to meet your nutritional needs:

  1. Eggs 🥚 — Complete protein containing all essential amino acids, plus nutrients such as choline and vitamin B12.
  2. Chicken or turkey 🍗 — Lean, protein-rich choices that make it easy to increase daily protein intake.
  3. Greek yogurt 🥛 — Provides high-quality protein, including casein, which digests relatively slowly.
  4. Fish 🐟 — Salmon, tuna, sardines, and other fish provide protein; oily fish also provide omega-3 fats.
  5. Beans and lentils 🌱 — Good sources of plant protein, carbohydrates, and fiber. Combining different plant foods can help provide a broad amino-acid profile.
  6. Nuts and seeds 🥜 — Provide protein, healthy fats, minerals, and calories that can be useful when trying to gain weight and muscle.

The bigger picture

For people who strength-train, a commonly recommended daily protein range is roughly 1.4–2.0 g of protein per kilogram of body weight, depending on goals and circumstances. Spreading protein across meals can also be practical.

If you’re over 60, resistance exercise becomes especially important because muscle naturally tends to decline with age. Pairing strength training with adequate protein and overall nutrition can help preserve muscle and functional strength.
