🥬 4 Types of People Who May Need to Limit or Avoid Cabbage

Cabbage is nutritious and safe for most people, but certain health conditions may call for caution. It isn’t accurate to say that these people must always avoid cabbage.

  1. People taking warfarin — cabbage is high in vitamin K, which can affect warfarin. Usually, the goal is to keep vitamin-K intake consistent, not eliminate cabbage altogether. Discuss major dietary changes with your clinician.
  2. People with significant digestive sensitivity — cabbage can cause gas and bloating because it contains fermentable carbohydrates. Smaller portions or well-cooked cabbage may be easier to tolerate.
  3. People with certain thyroid conditions — cabbage contains compounds called goitrogens. Normal amounts of cooked cabbage are generally fine for most people, but people with thyroid disease should discuss unusually large amounts or concentrated cabbage products with their healthcare professional.
  4. People with an allergy to cabbage or other cruciferous vegetables — they should avoid cabbage if it reliably causes allergic symptoms.

The bottom line

For most people, cabbage can be part of a healthy diet. Don’t eliminate it solely because of a social-media warning. If you take medication or have a medical condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether your individual situation requires dietary restrictions.
