Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps?
Nighttime leg cramps can happen to anyone, but they’re more common in certain groups:
- Older adults, especially people over 60.
- Pregnant women, particularly later in pregnancy.
- People who exercise heavily or stand/walk for long periods.
- People who become dehydrated or have significant fluid/electrolyte losses.
- People taking certain medications, including some diuretics and cholesterol-lowering medicines.
- People with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, kidney disease, nerve disorders, or circulation problems.
- People who spend long periods sitting or staying in one position.
Most nighttime cramps are harmless. However, if cramps are frequent, severe, associated with swelling or weakness, or repeatedly disturb your sleep, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.
