What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health? 🚽

Urine color can offer clues about hydration and certain health problems, but color alone cannot diagnose a condition. Foods, supplements, medications, and how much fluid you drink can all change it.

  • Pale yellow: Usually a sign of adequate hydration.

  • Dark yellow or amber: Often means you’re not getting enough fluids.

  • Very clear: You may simply be drinking a lot of water. Constantly forcing excessive amounts of water isn’t necessary.

  • Pink or red: Beets and some medications can cause this, but it can also indicate blood in the urine and should be checked if there’s no obvious explanation.

  • Orange: Can occur with dehydration or certain medications; persistent unexplained orange urine deserves medical attention.

  • Brown or cola-colored: Can occur with severe dehydration, some medications, liver problems, or muscle breakdown and should be medically evaluated if unexplained.

  • Blue or green: Uncommon; certain medications, dyes, or infections can occasionally cause these colors.

  • Cloudy or milky: Can occur with urinary infections, crystals, or other substances.

🚨 When to get checked

Seek medical advice for persistent red, brown, or markedly cloudy urine, particularly if you also have pain, fever, burning when urinating, increased frequency, or back/flank pain.

One unusual color doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Look at the overall pattern, how long the change lasts, and whether other symptoms are present.
