Surprising Uses of Vicks VapoRub You Probably Didn’t Know About

Vicks VapoRub: What It Can and Can’t Do

Vicks VapoRub is primarily a topical cough suppressant and temporary muscle/joint ache rub. Many online posts attribute dozens of other uses to it, but several aren’t well supported by evidence.

Reasonable uses

  • Cough relief: Applying it to the chest and throat can temporarily relieve cough associated with a cold in adults and children 2 years and older.

  • Minor muscle and joint aches: It can provide temporary relief when rubbed onto sore muscles or joints.

Popular claims to be cautious about

You’ll often see recommendations to use it for fungal nail infections, toenail fungus, insect bites, headaches, earaches, burns, or nasal congestion by putting it inside the nostrils. These uses either have limited evidence or aren’t recommended by the manufacturer.

Don’t put VapoRub inside your nose, in your mouth, or on broken/damaged skin. It can irritate the skin and airways and should not be swallowed. Keep it away from young children.
