Surprising Uses of Vicks VapoRub You Probably Didn’t Know About

Surprising uses of Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub is primarily a topical cough suppressant for temporary relief of cough associated with the common cold, and it can also provide temporary relief of minor muscle and joint aches when used as directed. Many viral posts attribute dozens of extra uses to it, but those aren’t necessarily medically established.

Uses you may hear about

  • Cough relief: Applying it to the chest and throat as directed can temporarily relieve cough.

  • Minor muscle aches: It can be rubbed onto sore muscles and joints for temporary relief.

  • Toenail fungus: You may see claims that VapoRub clears fungal nails. Some small studies have reported improvement, but it isn’t an established first-line treatment and can take a long time.

  • Dry skin: Some people use it on rough areas such as heels, but this is a cosmetic use rather than one of its labeled medical indications.

  • Insect bites: Menthol/camphor can produce a cooling sensation that may temporarily make an itchy area feel better, but it doesn’t treat the underlying bite.

🚫 Viral uses to avoid

Don’t put VapoRub inside your nose, in or around your eyes, on broken skin, or on mucous membranes. It contains camphor and other ingredients that can cause irritation or toxicity if misused. It also should not be swallowed.

For children, follow the product’s age restrictions and directions carefully; camphor-containing products can be dangerous if swallowed.

Bottom line: VapoRub has legitimate uses, but claims that it can cure infections, remove varicose veins, permanently eliminate fungus, or treat serious medical conditions are not supported simply because the product feels soothing.

If you have a particular viral VapoRub “hack” in mind, tell me what it claims to treat and I’ll separate what’s supported, what’s plausible, and what’s unsafe.
