Silent Aneurysms: Why Some Brain Conditions Go Unnoticed

Silent Brain Aneurysms: Why They Can Go Unnoticed

A brain (cerebral) aneurysm is a weakened area in an artery wall that bulges outward. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms at all and are discovered incidentally during brain imaging done for another reason.

Why can an aneurysm be “silent”?

A small, unruptured aneurysm may not press on nearby brain tissue or nerves and may therefore produce no noticeable symptoms. Even when symptoms occur, they can be vague, such as:

  • Headache or pain around the eye
  • Changes in vision or double vision
  • A drooping eyelid
  • Difficulty moving an eye
  • Numbness or weakness affecting part of the face

These symptoms do not prove that someone has an aneurysm and can have many other causes.

The emergency warning sign 🚨

The major danger is rupture, which causes bleeding around the brain (subarachnoid hemorrhage). A classic symptom is a sudden, extremely severe headache, often described as a “thunderclap” headache. It may occur with vomiting, neck stiffness, loss of consciousness, seizure, or neurological problems.

Call emergency medical services immediately if someone develops a sudden, severe, unusual headache—especially if accompanied by any of these symptoms.

Can silent aneurysms be prevented?

Not all aneurysms can be prevented, but important risk factors include smoking and uncontrolled high blood pressure. Avoiding tobacco and keeping blood pressure under control are among the most useful steps.

Routine brain scans aren’t recommended for everyone. Screening may be considered for people with certain strong family histories or inherited conditions, so this is something to discuss with a healthcare professional rather than arranging an imaging test solely because of occasional headaches.

Most importantly, having no symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean an aneurysm isn’t present, and having headaches doesn’t mean you have one. Medical evaluation and appropriate imaging are what establish the diagnosis.
