Scratches on glasses: don’t waste money: apply a little and they’ll disappear instantly.

If you’re referring to the viral trick that claims toothpaste, baking soda, or another household product will make scratches on eyeglasses disappear instantly, be careful. It generally doesn’t remove scratches and can make the lenses worse.

👓 What actually works

  • Tiny surface marks: Clean the lenses gently with lukewarm water and a microfiber lens cloth. Sometimes what looks like a scratch is actually dried residue.

  • Real scratches: There is no safe household paste that reliably removes them from modern prescription lenses. Abrasive products can strip coatings such as anti-reflective or scratch-resistant coatings.

  • Deep or distracting scratches: An optician can determine whether the lenses need replacing. For prescription glasses, replacing the lens is usually the safest solution.

🚫 Avoid these viral hacks

Don’t rub lenses with toothpaste, baking soda, glass polish, car wax, or abrasive powders. Even if the lens initially looks shinier, you may be removing or damaging its protective coating.

Best prevention: Rinse dusty lenses with water first, use a lens-safe cleaner when needed, and wipe them with a clean microfiber cloth rather than a shirt or paper towel.

So, unfortunately, there isn’t an instant household ingredient that makes genuine eyeglass scratches disappear.
