Mix toothpaste and Vaseline, I didn’t expect it to be so effective

While internet viral trends frequently claim that mixing toothpaste and Vaseline creates a miracle cure for everything from deep wrinkles to stubborn dark spots, dermatologists warn that this combination can actually do more harm than good for your skin.
Despite claims that it acts as an overnight wrinkle eraser or blemish smoother, here is why skincare experts advise against using this DIY mixture on your face:

Why the Toothpaste + Vaseline Mixture is Problematic

  1. Severe Skin Irritation and Chemical Burns:
    • Toothpaste is formulated with harsh chemical detergents (like sodium lauryl sulfate), baking soda, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and strong mint oils designed for tooth enamel—not delicate facial skin.
    • Applying these ingredients to your face can strip your skin’s natural moisture barrier, leading to redness, stinging, contact dermatitis, and peeling.
  2. Trapping Bacteria and Worsening Acne:
    • Vaseline is pure petroleum jelly, which is an occlusive. It creates an airtight, waterproof seal over whatever is underneath it.
    • If you mix irritating toothpaste into Vaseline and apply it to blemishes or acne-prone areas, the petroleum jelly traps those harsh chemicals and skin bacteria directly against your pores. This can trigger painful breakouts, clogged pores, and severe inflammation.
  3. Lip and Eye Damage:
    • Many viral videos suggest using this mix as a lip plumper or under-eye treatment. However, the menthol and mint in toothpaste create micro-fissures on the delicate skin of the lips, causing severe chapping and irritation, while getting mint or peroxide near the eyes can cause acute chemical conjunctivitis.

What These Products Are Actually Safe For

  • Vaseline: Excellent on its own for locking in moisture on extremely dry patches (like heels or elbows), protecting minor cuts and scrapes, or soothing chapped lips.
  • Toothpaste: Best kept in the bathroom cabinet for cleaning teeth.
If you are looking for effective ways to smooth fine lines, clear acne, or hydrate your skin, it is always safest to stick to dermatologist-tested products containing active ingredients like retinoids, hyaluronic acid, or gentle chemical exfoliants.
