If your pillows have turned yellow from sweat, body oils, and moisture, you can often freshen them up with a few simple steps. Check the care label first, because washing instructions vary by pillow type.
3 tips to whiten yellowed pillows
- Pre-treat the yellow areas
Mix a small amount of liquid laundry detergent with warm water and gently work it into the stained areas. Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes before washing. - Wash according to the care label
For washable synthetic or down-alternative pillows, use a gentle cycle with an appropriate amount of detergent. An oxygen-based laundry whitener can help with yellowing if the manufacturer permits it. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the care instructions specifically allow it. - Dry them completely
Dry pillows thoroughly on the recommended setting, fluffing them periodically. Do not put a pillow back on the bed while it is still damp, because trapped moisture can encourage mildew and odors.
Extra tip: Use a washable pillow protector underneath your pillowcase. It helps prevent sweat and oils from reaching the pillow and can greatly slow future yellowing.
If the pillow has a memory-foam or latex core, don’t put it in the washing machine unless its manufacturer specifically says you can.
