How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

Here is a quick, safe, and effective DIY method to make your gold, silver, and gemstone jewelry sparkle like new using items you already have at home.

What You Will Need

  • A small bowl
  • Warm water (not boiling)
  • Mild liquid dish soap (like Dawn)
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush (a baby toothbrush works best)
  • A clean microfiber or soft cloth for drying

Step-by-Step Cleaning Method

  1. Soak the Jewelry:
Pour warm water into the bowl and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Stir to combine. Place your jewelry in the bowl and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. This loosens up trapped dirt, lotion, body oils, and grime.
  2. Gently Scrub:
Take one piece at a time and use the soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub it. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas, the backs of settings, and underneath stones where gunk builds up.
Note: Be very gentle, especially with softer gemstones like pearls, opals, or turquoise.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly:
Hold your jewelry under a warm running tap to rinse away all the soapy residue.
Important Safety Tip: Always plug your sink drain first so your precious jewelry doesn’t accidentally slide down the pipe!
  4. Dry and Polish:
Pat the jewelry dry with a clean microfiber or soft, lint-free cloth. You can also let it air dry completely on a towel before putting it away.

Quick Material Guidelines

  • Gold & Diamonds: This soap-and-water method is completely safe for them.
  • Silver: If your silver has tarnished (turned dark), dish soap won’t remove the tarnish. You will need a specialized silver polishing cloth or a gentle baking soda paste.
  • Porous Stones (Pearls, Opals, Emeralds): Do not soak pearls or opals for long periods, as water can weaken their adhesives or damage them. A quick wipe with a damp soapy cloth is usually safer.
Is there a specific type of jewelry (like silver, gold, or a particular gemstone) you are looking to clean?
