How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

If you have phlegm/mucus in your chest or throat, the goal is usually to thin it and help your body clear it, rather than trying to completely suppress the cough. Most mucus from a cold or respiratory infection improves on its own.

Natural things you can try

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Water helps thin mucus, making it easier to cough up. Warm liquids such as tea, broth, or warm water can also soothe your throat.

  • Honey: Try 1–2 teaspoons of honey in warm water or tea, particularly before bed. It can soothe coughing. Never give honey to a child under 1 year old.

  • Warm salt-water gargle: Mix about ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, and spit it out. This can help with throat mucus and irritation.

  • Take a warm shower: Moist, warm air can help loosen mucus. A cool-mist humidifier is another option.

  • Sleep with your head elevated: Extra pillows can make breathing more comfortable and help mucus drain.

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke: Tobacco smoke irritates the airways and can make coughing and mucus worse.

  • If mucus is coming from your nose/sinuses: A saline nasal rinse can help clear post-nasal mucus that drips into the throat.

A simple routine

Morning: Warm water/tea → saline nasal rinse if congested → gentle coughing to clear mucus.
During the day: Keep drinking water regularly and avoid smoke.
Evening: Warm shower → honey in warm tea/water → sleep with your head slightly elevated.

There isn’t good evidence that particular herbal remedies, spicy drinks, or “detox” mixtures actually remove mucus from the lungs; simple hydration, humidified air, and treating the underlying cause are more sensible approaches
