How Long Does a Watermelon Last Once You Have Cut It?

🍉 How Long Does Cut Watermelon Last?

Once watermelon is cut, it becomes more vulnerable to bacterial growth. Refrigerate it promptly and keep it in a clean, covered container.

  • In the refrigerator (40°F/4°C or below): use cut watermelon within about 3–4 days for best safety and quality.
  • At room temperature: don’t leave cut watermelon out for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F/32°C, limit that to 1 hour.
  • Whole, uncut watermelon: it can last considerably longer and doesn’t need refrigeration until cut, although refrigeration can extend its quality.

🚨 When to throw it away

Discard watermelon if it develops an unusual fermented or sour smell, slimy texture, mold, or an obvious change in appearance. When in doubt, throw it out.

A useful tip: cut watermelon into clean portions and refrigerate them promptly, rather than leaving a cut half sitting uncovered in the refrigerator.
